EXPERIENCE FROM THE OPEN-WHEEL LADDER. APPLIED TO DRIVER DEVELOPMENT.
Michael d’Orlando provides professional driver coaching built around firsthand experience competing throughout the North American open-wheel ladder.
From championship success in USF2000 and race wins in USF Pro 2000 to competition in INDY NXT by Firestone, Michael understands the demands drivers face as the level of competition increases.
His coaching approach is collaborative and practical. The goal is not simply to tell a driver where to brake or how to approach a corner. It is to help them understand why the car is behaving the way it is, how their inputs affect performance, and how to make better decisions behind the wheel.
OPEN-WHEEL DRIVER COACHING
Michael works with drivers on areas that can directly influence performance throughout a race weekend.
Coaching can include:
Event and race-weekend preparation
Video and data analysis
Performance and mindset preparation
Post-event debriefing
Driving technique
Maximizing car performance
Driver feedback
Understanding vehicle behavior
Race strategy
Situational decision-making
Track preparation
Racecraft development
Lap-time consistency
Long-term driver development
Coaching can be delivered in person or virtually and tailored around the driver, team, event, and specific development goals.
EXPERIENCE ACROSS NORTH AMERICAN OPEN-WHEEL RACING
Michael’s career has given him firsthand experience across road courses, street circuits, and ovals throughout North America.
That experience includes events and competition at circuits and racing markets such as:
Florida
St. Petersburg
Sebring International Raceway
Indiana
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Ohio
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
Wisconsin
Road America
Milwaukee
Alabama
Barber Motorsports Park
Michigan
Detroit Grand Prix street circuit
California
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
Oregon
Portland International Raceway
Tennessee
Nashville and the Music City Grand Prix
Ontario, Canada
Toronto street circuit
These environments demand very different driving styles. Street circuits reward precision and commitment. Traditional road courses require adaptability and technical understanding. Ovals introduce an entirely different approach to traffic, confidence, car placement, and decision-making.
Michael brings that firsthand perspective into the coaching process.
USF + INDY NXT DRIVER DEVELOPMENT
Michael’s coaching is especially relevant for drivers developing through the USF Pro Championships and INDY NXT pathway.
His experience includes:
USF2000 championship competition
Winning the 2022 USF2000 Championship
USF Pro 2000 race wins and podiums
INDY NXT competition
Road course experience
Street circuit racing
Oval racing
Working within professional open-wheel teams
Race weekend preparation at increasingly competitive levels
For developing drivers, that experience can provide useful perspective on what changes as they progress through the ladder, from the demands of the car to communication with engineers and teams.
VIDEO + DATA ANALYSIS
Performance often comes down to details.
Michael can work with drivers to review onboard video, available data, driving inputs, racing lines, braking technique, corner approach, and vehicle behavior to identify areas where performance can improve.
The goal is not only to find lap time. It is to help the driver understand what created that lap time so the improvement becomes repeatable.
DRIVER FEEDBACK + VEHICLE BEHAVIOR
Learning how to communicate what a race car is doing is an important part of driver development.
Michael helps drivers connect what they are feeling behind the wheel with what the car needs. That can include understanding balance, grip, braking behavior, corner entry, rotation, traction, and changes throughout a session or race.
Better understanding can lead to better feedback. Better feedback can help the driver and team make more informed decisions.
RACECRAFT + DECISION-MAKING
Raw speed is only one part of racing.
Michael’s coaching can also focus on the decisions that happen around the lap time. Race starts. Overtaking. Defending. Traffic. Managing risk. Changing conditions. Strategy. And recognizing when an opportunity is worth taking.
His experience racing on road courses, street circuits, and ovals gives him a broad perspective on how those decisions change depending on the environment.
IN-PERSON + VIRTUAL COACHING
Driver development does not have to stop when the race weekend ends.
Michael’s coaching can be structured around in-person trackside support, virtual coaching sessions, video review, data analysis, pre-event preparation, and post-event debriefing.
Programs can be tailored to a specific event or used as part of a longer-term development plan.
PREPARE. UNDERSTAND. PERFORM.
Whether a driver is preparing for a new circuit, adjusting to a different car, working through a challenging race weekend, or preparing for the next step in the open-wheel ladder, Michael’s approach stays focused on helping the driver better understand their performance and make meaningful progress.
